Whether you’re travelling to Malta or is new to Malta, have lived here all your life or fall somewhere in between, there’s always plenty you can do to fill your spare time. Packing natural beauty, culture and history galore in just 316 km2, Malta is far from boring.
If you don’t know where to start or have run out of ideas, with the help of this guide, here are some suggestions to get you going – but we can guarantee that you’ll discover more gems of your own along the way!
Hiking
With sweltering summers that are best enjoyed in the island’s surrounding waters, you can explore Malta’s great outdoors any other time of the year – especially in winter when the countryside is at its greenest.
Take in the views of rolling hills, winding valleys and terraced fields in rural areas like the island of Gozo and the towns of Mellieha, Mgarr, Siggiewi, Dingli, Zejtun and Zurrieq, to name a few.
Make your way along one of the many hiking trails that are littered with historical landmarks – from prehistoric temples and old windmills to wayside towers, palaces and tiny chapels that date as far back as the Middle Ages.
Island cruises
Combine relaxation and sightseeing on a full-day boat trip. Take a harbour cruise to visit Malta’s harbours and creeks and behold the trademark Valletta skyline. Or go for a cruise round the whole island and spot dolphins near the island of Filfla or beneath the towering Dingli Cliffs.
Some boat trips stop in Comino where you can swim in the crystal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon, or ride in a speedboat that will get your heart racing as the salty rush of the sea fills your lungs. How’s that for a breath of fresh air?
Beach day
For the quintessential day of doing absolutely nothing and feeling wonderful about it, it doesn’t get any better than lazing on a sandy beach. It’s also the best way to cool off in summer – away from the hum of fans and air-conditioning. You’ll end the day much lighter, happier and browner, which is why sunblock is a must!
Malta’s most popular sandy beaches include Ghadira, Ghajn Tuffieha, Golden Bay, Gnejna and Armier, among many others.
Open-air markets
Outdoor markets are an integral part of the authentic Maltese experience. Do you love digging up vintage and quirky finds? You’ll enjoy browsing the overflowing stalls at flea markets like those in Birgu and Valletta.
The Ta’ Qali Farmers’ Market is the place to be to buy fresh local produce. Follow that up with a visit to the Ta’ Qali Crafts Village for some artistic inspiration, then head over to the sprawling grounds of the Ta’ Qali National Park.
Down south, the popular Sunday fish market in the old fishing village of Marsaxlokk always has the freshest catch of the day, which you can feast on for lunch at one of the many surrounding seafood restaurants, before taking a stroll along the promenade in the neighbouring town of Marsascala.
Scour Valletta
For the ultimate cultural experience that Malta has to offer, look no further than the grand capital of Valletta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site brimming with stately palazzos, fortifications, Baroque churches, historical gardens and so much more.
To immerse yourself fully, go beyond the timeless riches studding this unique city to the backstreets that tell a different story. Steep narrow streets, rows of wooden balconies hung with laundry, and run-down façades will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. Round off the day by crossing over to Birgu by boat. There, you’ll find another time capsule – the oldest and grandest of the Three Cities, which even pre-date Valletta.
